Tony Marino: Pianist, Composer, Bandleader & Innovator
Tony Marino is a pianist, composer, bandleader, and recording engineer from South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Active since 1975, Marino is celebrated for his ability to cross genres with ease, blending jazz, Latin jazz, tango, funk, rock, reggae, and world music into a distinctive and dynamic sound. Over the course of his career, he has released 23 albums of original compositions, building a reputation as both a prolific recording artist and a resilient innovator.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Tony Marino discovered his passion for music at just seven years old after hearing Leon Russell and Marc Benno’s Look Inside the Asylum Choir. By his teenage years, he was studying piano with Bill DelGovenatore, who introduced him to jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk.
Mentorship and Musical Growth
Working at Sam D’Amico Music exposed Marino to leading local musicians, including guitarist Frank DiBussolo and bassist Al Stauffer, broadening his understanding of harmony and improvisation. He later studied under pianist Tom Lawton and was mentored by Ernest “Hoppy” Hopkins, solidifying his foundation in jazz.
First Bands and Recordings
In 1975, while still in high school, Tony Marino joined Idea ’71, a Philadelphia Italian-American band that performed across the Tri-State area. During his years with the group, they recorded the album Supersano as well as singles at Alpha International Recording Studios. These experiences gave Marino an early taste of professional musicianship and studio work.
Expanding Horizons
After relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1995, Marino founded Tony Marino and Havana Heat, later renamed Latin Jazz Sounds. The band quickly became known for high-energy live performances at clubs and festivals. That same year, Marino released his debut original albums — The Latin Jazz Project and Note for Note — which marked the beginning of a prolific recording career.

Throughout the 2000s, he broadened his musical palette with albums such as Samba De Say Party (2001), Broad Street (2003), and It’s Not That Complicated (2006).
Distributed worldwide through Jamey Aebersold, these projects helped establish Tony Marino as a multi-genre composer with global reach.
